Monkeybiz recreates the iconic Adidas Trefoil in beads.
The collaboration between Monkeybiz and Adidas South Africa represents a fusion of traditional African craft and modern design, reflecting both brands' commitment to cultural authenticity and innovation. Monkeybiz, known for empowering women through sustainable income opportunities, brought its renowned beadwork artistry to the forefront in this project. The partnership with Adidas centered around the opening of the largest Adidas store on the African continent, located at Gateway Mall in Durban.
The concept of the installation revolved around Ubuntu—a deeply rooted African philosophy that emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity, compassion, and community. By incorporating beadwork, an iconic traditional craft in many African cultures, the project celebrated the cultural heritage of the region while enhancing Adidas' modern and global identity.
Six skilled glue-beading artists from Monkeybiz were chosen for this initiative. Over the course of 20 days, they meticulously beaded 39 pairs of the iconic Stan Smith Adidas shoes. Each shoe became a symbol of artistic mastery, blending the vibrant, intricate patterns of traditional African beadwork with Adidas' global brand aesthetic. The result was a powerful and unique installation that resonated deeply with the themes of Ubuntu—community, warmth, and human connection.
More than just an artistic endeavor, this collaboration made a tangible impact on the lives of the Monkeybiz artists involved. Adidas' support empowered these women, not only by providing them with an income but also by recognizing their craftsmanship on an international platform. This project highlighted the transformative power of art, culture, and collaboration in uplifting communities and creating opportunities for growth.
The Adidas x Monkeybiz installation stands as a testament to what can be achieved when traditional art forms meet contemporary design, and how such collaborations can lead to meaningful change in local communities.
