Zisiwe
Lumkwana

Born 1962, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Zisiwe was born in Tsomo. There she learned to become a traditional healer. She loves people and cooking. Her favourite music artists is Umnaqanga Masikhanti (Black Mambazo). When she isn’t beading she loves beading traditional dresses and planting vegetables and flowers in her garden.

Ndikhuliswe ngabazali bam ndingumntu awayethanda ukugula kulapo abazali bam bandithumela eKapa ukuze ndizofumana uncedo kulapho kwafumaneka impilo yam indithumela ekubeni ndibeb ligqhirhakazi.

Any stories of your upbringing? What was your upbringing like?
I was raised by my parents but I was always a sick child and they sent me to Cape Town so that I could get help. This is where they found out that I was to become a traditional healer.

Ndayifundela emagqhirheni ngobane sisenze intsimbi zamagqhirha.

How were you introduced to beading?
I learnt beadwork from other traditional healers because we would need to create our own jewellery and beaded adornments to wear in practice and training.

Kukwenza intsimbi nokukhulisa abantwana bam.

What inspires you in life?
Raising my children and doing my beading is what inspires me in life.

What do you love about beading?
I enjoy beading very much because it is a great way for me to keep busy.

I would love people to know that I know anything and everything there is to do with beads.
