Born in Mount Fletcher in Eastern Cape, South Africa.
I grew up living in the Eastern Cape in a village called Ramafulo. I then came to Cape Town with my husband in the year 2000. We both struggled to get a job. We would maybe every now and then get a part-time job.
Let’s hear from Makutloana:
How did you find out about Monkeybiz?
I met Mathapelo Ngaka in the year 2001 and she introduced me to her mum Makatiso Ngaka. I learned beadwork from Makatiso & that’s how I got to join Monkeybiz making the beaded pictures and coasters. Then my husband and daughter learned from me & now my whole family is doing beadwork.
How did your life change since you joined Monkeybiz?
My life changed so much since I joined Monkeybiz. I’m able to send my children to school and put the bread on the table.
What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
For me since I started, I haven’t had any other job. I much prefer being at home working at my own pace and time knowing that I will be earning an income when done with my pieces.
